Beginning in June, 2016, Crossroads Mission Center made a commitment to help fight food insecurity in King William County. Crossroads Mission Center started by helping 40 children, who qualified for the free/reduced lunch program, for the month of August. In the summer of 2017, 100 children were served for the entire summer break, which is 10 weeks. By the summer of 2018, our program had grown and we were able to serve approximately 154 children for the 10 week summer break. We were also able to provide meals for the Thanksgiving, winter, and spring breaks.
Each child receives “2-Day Bags” consisting of 4 meals for 2 days for 1 child. The bag contains 2 breakfast, lunch, snack and drink items. For the 2018 summer program, we served 13,024 meals to needy children in our community.
Our 2019 mission is to continue to expand our program and increase the number of children served within our community. In order to accomplish this mission successfully, we will need the support of volunteers and organizations willing to either provide supplies needed for the bags or funding for us to purchase those supplies.
The success of this program is directly related to the commitment of individuals and organizations that donated time, funding and supplies. Our next distribution is March 30th and will cover the week children will be out of school on spring break. Very soon after spring break, we will begin our summer distributions, with the first delivery being made on June 15.
I would like to invite you to partner with Crossroads Mission Center as we work together to help feed needy children in our community. Should you wish to make a monetary donation, 100% of all funds received goes towards the purchase of items used to complete a 2-Day Bag. At today’s market prices, it costs approximately $4.00 per bag. As little as $8.00 per week will feed one child and help stop the spread of food insecurity.
Thank you for your willingness to consider helping us help the children in our community!
